CBS Edits McCain's Whopper Out of Broadcast

advertisement

Yesterday, John McCain made a critical error during an interview with CBS' Katie Couric: He stated that the surge in Iraq was responsible for the "Anbar Awakening." The problem with that is the awakening began in September 2006, months before Bush announced the surge.

HOWEVER, that's not the interview which CBS aired. Instead, they clipped and inserted his answer to a previous question, leaving his claim that the surge begat the awakening on the cutting room floor.

What's this?
Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

So the media fawns over Obama in public, but in private they're editing the tapes to cover up McCain's stupidity.

Twice my seeds of this were eaten so I put it in an article, but I'm glad to see it here. Claims of bias against McCain are ridiculous, but it isn't as though they don't omit the worst of Obama too. Obama's FISA vote supporting immunity for the telecoms never got air time, nor his legal advisor stating the current Administration crimes would go largely unprosecuted.

The whole Orwellian show is run for corporate interests, by corporate interests, with the goal of maintaining a misinformed, complacent public.

No defense of CBS and Couric (who is truly pathetic in the worst possible 'Barbara-Walters-anchorwoman' kind of way), but...

... could this have been a masterful stroke on their part? Edit the McCain gaffe out... but make it available elsewhere, thus assuring that a much larger audience will see the McCain goof?

Naw... that would be too creative for CBS... and too journalism-y for Couric.

This is just a joke - a travesty. How many times are they going to cover up basic fundamental errors like this. Iraq-Afghanistan border .... this .... how many others that have not been seen.

Its not so much the errors in themselves - although they are bad enough - its the fact that if he does this domestically, what he hell will he do in complex matters in talks with other World Leaders, the prospect and potential consequencies are mindblowing.

It was beautiful!

CBS ratings are down .... Katie Cuties ratings are down.

CBS has Katie Cutie interview John McCaintremember, figuring he would make a gaffe (he always does) that they would not report !

And then, they would wait for us to pick it up, we always do. (Remember, these guys get paid big bucks to think up this sh*t.)

So, they do, she does, he does, ... BIG time! They have their gaffe, they ignore it, No comment, ...... nada ...... and sure enough we go "Bug F*ck Crazy!...

....running around like nuts, saying "...wait, what the? ....did you here what he said? ...... how can you... ?".... WTF"??!!

And WALLAA! ......ratings are.............up. .

"Obama's FISA vote supporting immunity for the telecoms never got air time, nor his legal advisor stating the current Administration crimes would go largely unprosecuted."

Well its definitely true that the current administration is guilty of many unbelievably haenous crimes and they surely will go unprosecuted. And as far as telecommunication goes. It doesn't f'ing matter. Its all about which multi billion dollar company might have a chance to make an extra couple million next year instead of another one. That crap is unimportant. We must take the issues that hold priority into consideration first.

So those examples hold no weight against McCain's (and Bush's) many slip ups regarding matters of national security.

Actually, it would not be a very "elaborate" scheme, and even if CBS had not planned it all ahead of time (and they probably didn't), it is conceivable that they did deliberately edit out the comment in an attempt to bring attention to the interview.

The bottom line is ....would the interview have gotten the legs it did if CBS had not done what it did? Or, would it have been, just another interview with John McCain, that included, just another gaffe by John McCain?

McCain is about 3/4s right on this issue bondi. Here's a link to the NYTimes article.

But several foreign policy analysts said that if Mr. McCain got the chronology wrong, his broader point — that the troop escalation was crucial for the Awakening movement to succeed and spread — was right. "I would say McCain is three-quarters right in this debate," said Michael E. O'Hanlon, a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution.

Sorry pal ............ but in the REAL world, we have no other option. I mean, we DO have the option of throwing away our vote on a 3rd party candidate .... but, like it or not ..... it's gonna be McCain of Oboma.

If you want to get a 3rd party rolling with an alternative candidate, just go out and mobilize a few thousand people, and raise.....oh, say 40 or 50 million dollars ... find yourself a viable candidate (Ron Paul would be my pick) and you've a third Party Campaign going.

Who cares what O'Hanlons opinion is really?

I would say that given Micahael E. O'Hanlan's track record on this issue I am unwillling to really give such conclusory statements of percentages any credibility. He has been spinning the Iraq war and McCain for a long time coming.

I would say that his actual comment is 100% wrong. Now you can invent new comments for him that are closer to the truth as you have here - but they are not what he said.

    Not necessarily so.

There is a movement out there to Prosecute Bush after he leaves office.

Vincent Bugliosi, one of the most successful prosecutors in this country, with a record of twenty-one murder convictions, (including Charles Manson), without a single loss, has a new book, in which he outlines his case for the prosecution of George W. Bush for murder. Bugliosi has successfully prosecuted 105 of 106 felony jury trials. He is the author of "Helter Skelter" and his latest book is "The Prosecution of George W. Bush for Murder."

The link will take you to an article by the "Kick them All Out Project" and includes a tape by Bugliosi in which he outlines his extremely convincing case.

I applaud Vincent Bugliosi for his book.

I haven't read it yet, but have it on my short list this summer. I also haven't read his book on the JFK assassination, in which I understand he refutes any conspiracy. In that matter, I would have to disagree. Without dredging up a lengthy debate, I still have problems with the fact that LBJ seemed to orchestrate the Dallas visit, and he had the most to gain.

    Sure, I'm probably wrong.

ChrisRonk-Followed your suggestion re: feedback link at CBS. Tried three times, but no luck. Every time I typed in the combo of July 22 + Katie Couric + John McCain interview the page closed and started all over. Submitted a letter to the editor of our local paper regarding this issue, but they have a policy of not printing letters of praise or critizism of other news organizations. Sent the same letter to USATODAY and have no doubt that it will not be printed there either. Have you noticed that most of the flap seems to be focused on another McCain gaffe, rather than CBS manipulating the news? Isn't that called 'propaganda'? Who said, "When the media control what we see and control what we hear they control what we think. When the media can control what we think, they can control how we vote"? Although, since I personally haven't trusted the main stream media in years, that's just my opinion. The only thing that suprises me about this is that CBS let themselves get caught at it. I wonder how many other times they, and the other major networks, have done this before and not gotten called out on it.

ChrisRonk-did as you suggested, but no luck. At CBS website/feedback the page closed three times, whenever I typed in July 22 + Katie Couric + John McCain inteview. Have you noticed that most of the flap is about another McCain gaffe? Cripes, that should be old hat by now. CBS manipulating the news tho? Isn't that called 'propaganda'? Shouldn't that rate a story by itself? Actually, the only surprise, for me, is that they let themselves get caught at it. I have noticed that the other major networds aren't touching this story, only the part where McCain again eats one of his shoes. I do wonder how many other times all of the networks have pulled this crap and gotten away with it.

The feedback form worked this morning. They either took it down or it got flooded. I hope the latter, but I doubt it.

I also linked to a story regarding another mistake that the liberals at CBS covered up here.

It is impossible to overstate just how powerful the media is when it comes to shaping our opinions. You need to ask yourself - Who owns the media? What do they stand to gain from a McCain Presidency? (I know conspiracy theories)

This is why MSM is losing its viewers and why they lost me years ago. I don't trust them.

It is impossible to overstate just how powerful the media is when it comes to shaping our opinions.

A common statement from friends I have known that were in, or running for public office goes something like this:

"First thing in the morning, I have to read the paper and watch TV to see what they're saying I said yesterday."

Years few ago, I was a campaign manager for a New York State Senator, when I read a News article reporting on a meeting or rally we attended the day before, I often thought that I may have been at the wrong meeting.

If you knew the amount of edited, distorted and "out of context" news you get from the media it would set your hair on fire.

Today we a tool that the we never had before, and your looking at it right now, With the power of the 'net, and it's instant exchange of information through forums like Newsvine, the organized Media is hard pressed to report the news in a more accurate and unbiased manner.

The CBS coverage is revealing about their priorities, but even more revealing (about McCain's character) is the claim that Obama would be willing to "lose the war in order to win an election." How dumb, how ridiculous, how despicable. If McCain believes that Obama would want to lose a war in which we have invested so much blood and treasure, then he has a terribly warped understanding of his opponent. Has McCain not heard that the sovereign goverment of Iraq and the formerly rigid administration of George Bush are now mowing to Obama's positions. Does he not see that he is fast becoming completely irrelelvent with his "surge has worked" mantra?

All I have heard McCain say this week is that the surge has worked and we are winning this war. It just does not compute: McCain said he would prefer to lose the election and win the war. Okay, we're winning the war and he is losing the election. He should be happy and go home.

Gen Y here, though on the downhill side of my 20's and creeping up on 30. I think, for the most part, we know 'what's up'. Not one of my friends can even fathom how McCain has made it this far, much less even think about voting for the man. But, as you say, the important thing is to get out to the polls and put in our 2 cents in the form of a ballot. Taking an active part in changing our gov't is exactly the change that Obama is talking about.

Believe me Pitts alot of us youngins' realize we cant leave it to chance and elders anymore. Since Bush, there is almost a resentment brewing from the mistakes of past generations. I believe my generation 19-24 will take this whole election to heart and do what we can to take those criminals out of office. Speaking on the behalf of friends in my age group I find they fear America's forgetfulness the most. If Obama wins he will likely take blame for most of Bush's issues. And media will have no problem with it what so ever.

I think that the younger generation knows "whats up" but is easily distracted as well. The last election day I sat with a woman in her apartment, a poster of Bush misspeaks behind her, who mused that at the last minute she found herself undecided - Kerry was a "flip-flopper" after all. She asked us who to vote for. This young woman was the chief editor of her university's paper and responsible for campaign coverage. I was at a loss for words.

Thanks for reminding me to volunteer just a touch more than I am / have. I did a day of voter registration for Obama back before the primary - even though Kentucky is one of the few (and a diminishing few at that) states which is a sure lock for McCain, it's still a matter of being part of the wave ... if I just register a dozen people, and get 2 of them to volunteer - Obama won't win but there's an outside chance Senator McConnell could get ousted. My guess is not many people will choose the party ticket. Republicans won't like the thought of it, and Dems not voting for Obama might think twice before returning Sen. Obstructionist back to Washington.

Hi, I am a newbie to the newsvine, (signed up on the 2nd? or 4th? of July) and am a boomer too (born in '61). I have only missed one election since I could vote. I always took my daughter to the polls with me to show her the responsibility of being an American by voting, while she was growing up. My 20 year old daughter isn't interested yet. Even with the little bit I pass on to her, she feels I am doing the family proud by my activism. I wish she would be more aware, its her choice now though.

But I do have to agree with you. What CBS did was unethical. They were protecting McCain no doubt about it.

Also, if I could make a comment, In response to the recent posts here. I hover over different seeds to read whats going on and do find there is a lot of vile, name calling, label making, hate-filled words being planted. So sad. I feel sorry for the authors and their literary limitations. I usually don't make any comments on them, except once when I couldn't take Txsmomcrocadile's (not her real name but close enough) ignorance any longer. I had to call her on it.

Our standards can be very flexible, even tacky and tasteless in the appropriate areas, fun is fun and spam is just not fun anywhere. Check out the Help Group and Newsvine Welcome Group to find ways to acclimate more easily, make the most of friends and use the tools, if you're so inclined to like tools. When your acting "vile" your acting "immature", and age has nothing to do with it. I know because I'm 69 and I'm still told I'm "acting immature" from time to time.

        Thanks for the clarification.

Hetep and Respect Bondibox, important post. CBS is becoming another bush and the forty thieves TV, like Fox. Katie Couric, what a no balls piece of crap, to allow herself to be used like that. She should have resigned rather then participate in the deception of the American people on war.

Give credit to the Obama campaign for not taking full advantage of the increasingly apparent "mental recession" impacting Senator John McCain.

Perhaps the strategy is to let the growing public evidence speak for itself.

Oboma is a smart cookie. (As opposed to a Smart "Cracker" .... just a Joke!.... couldnt' help it)

          Let me rephrase ......

Oboma is very savvy when it comes to staying away from comments that can come back to bite him.

He has not made comments about McCains age, or his failing memory, or his poor geography skills and has treaded lightly regarding McCains constant Gaffes.

You are likely correct that he is just letting McCain, with the help of the press and the bloggers, bury himself.

That is one of the things I admired about Senator Obama in the primary race and he seems to be determined to maintain a certain standard of conduct in the general election campaign as well. He avoids pot-shots even when they are really easy targets. I feel that speaks a little bit to his integrity and his character. On the other hand, it could be primarily just good political tactics, but I'd like to give him the benefit of the doubt.

I doubt its "good political tactics" I think he should put some more pressure on McCain. Alot of these gaffes and issues are overlooked. And shouldn't be. I hope his VP is alot tougher on McCain.

It's probably a combination of both.

I think he should put some more pressure on McCain. A lot of these gaffes and issues are overlooked.

It's still early in the campaign. The public has a short memory, Oboma will likely bring up these issues closer to November, when it will have more of an effect on the voters.

Macks is right about the VP spot, it's good tactics to have the VP be the "attack dog"

McCain said the surge is what won the war, but in fact 3 other major factors were already in place andd winning months before the surge.
Obama voted against the surge, as the other factors were working, he felt it was a wit and see, than to send in more troops to be killed.
McCain loves war, is bitter about nam, like he said bomb, bomb, bomb, Iran, do you raelly want a man like this to be commander and chief?

I have always thought the media has too much power. They show what they want us to hear. They openly show who their favorites are. I hate the polls because they make people change their minds, nobody wants to vote for the guy who is behind in the polls. At election time when the media will say who the winner is and the polls have not even closed in the western states. People in the west who hear a winner has been chosen might not go to the vote because they figure why, they person I was going to vote for has already lost. When in reality if they would go vote the person who favored could win.

I think that it is significant that Obamoa is on the news getting all kinds of upbeat coverage, making a rousing speech to 200,000 Germans! ...... they're not even voting in our election, and they want to hear him.

At the same time the coverage for McCain is all about the stupid things he said. And by CBS deleting it from the broadcast, it became BIG time news ............

McCain is not having a good week.

Someone needs to make a video clip of all the mistakes or flips flops that mccain made that the media never called him on or that they simply edited out. Might last a few hours but it could counter that rediculous the media is in love with Obama video.

Did you happen to see Verdict with Dan Abrams last night? He did that (very briefly). He said something like, "McCain, be careful what you ask for ... want more coverage ... here you go". And then it was a clip of various McCain gaffes with the Chariots of Fire music in the background. If I find a link, I'll come back and post it.

Unfortunately, this is not surprising to me at all. I was once interviewed by 60 Minutes, and they cut and pasted my interview to put me in the worst possible light... here a "news" source is just doing the opposite.

I wouldn't care if they had done this for Obama - it's wrong.

I agree with Pamela Drew and disagree. I feel that the media parses just about every syllable emanating from both candidates mouths, whether one is scrutinized more than another is open to debate. The primaries are behind us, so I feel that if the network news media is going to bother to cover both nominees, then their coverage should be complete and truthful (yeah, yeah I know kind of an oxymoron) as well as non biased as the information or lack of it, is what many people will base their selection on.
Orwellian indeed. On this point I am in total agreement, we have become Corporate America and they permeate all citizens lives.
Although the book is a tad dated, Robert Ludlum had it right with his novel The Matarese Circle, just drop the cold war segments and it makes for interesting reading and based on what is going on in today's world, quite plausible.
The truth is out there somewhere !
